    Good, cheap MacPro 1,1 upgrade

The X5355 is only about 7% slower than the X5365 used in the MacPro 2,1 and can be found at a much lower cost. The installation can be harder than online guides suggest if your MacPro's parts have stuck together with age, but if you disassemble it in the right order it can be done. Be sure you upgrade the firmware before installing and reset the PRAM (cmd-opt-P-R) after the chips are in. Macs Fan Control will tame the runaway fans (try out the options). The oldest MacPro can still be a reliable, expandable, powerful machine!

  • easy to install, quick way to improve an older Mac

bought these to upgrade my Mac Pro 1,1 and made it a Mac Pro 2,1. went form a Quad core Mac Pro to an 8-core Mac Pro. installation was so easy. watched videos on how to do the swap, and it was so much easier than i had ever thought. the quad core Xeon chips work well, as they should. Getting these as used was a lot less expensive as if they were brand new. save much money and turned out to be a great value being a used product, but knowing that they were tested and were working when removed from where they came from.

  • MICROSOFT GROW-UP / STOP RIPPING-OFF PEOPLE!

MAKE SURE YOU HAVE MATCHED STEPPING CHIPS IF RUNNING WIDOWS 7, WINDOWS 8, WINDOWS 8.1. WITH MORE THAN 1 CPU. The Dell 690 workstation I put this into only blue screens if I try to run both Quad Cores I bought and right now I can only run one and that works great, it is a good improvement over the 2 Dual Cores @ 1.86 MHz. Overall it does make my computer a little faster running Windows 7 Pro but now I have to sell the second X5355 and find one that has the same stepping so I can have 2 Quad Cores. This is another Microsoft Foul-up (I am trying to be nice) as they had this problem with XP x64 and Vista x64 but repaired those operating systems. They have known of this problem for 4 years and have done NOTHING to fix it for Windows 7 or any other of their JUNK O.S.'s including their server ...

  • more life to my Mac Pro 1.1

compared to the xeon 5365 the 5355's are a cheap and very worthwhile upgrade, my geekbench score doubled going from 2 dual cores to 2 quad cores. The install is easy, you will need a 9 inch 3mm hex tool and some thermal paste, be sure to tighten the heat sink bolts lightly or you will get hotspots, also apply more paste than recommended. You may want to install the EFI update from netkas, it will make a 1.1 a 2.1, my 1.1 has a locked EFI but it handled the new CPU's fine I would recommend using an ssd boot drive too

  • Great option for older Mac Pro upgrade.

This is still a very viable upgrade path. I replaced the original processors on my Mac Pro 1,1 with a set of these in early 2015, which was not difficult or risky using the excellent videos on YT. In about an hour I went from four cores to eight and I was able to upgrade my OS from 10.6.8 to Mavericks. The eight cores run on average about 10 degrees warmer than the original four cores; not a big deal but I'll be looking at some options to cool more efficiently. The performance boost has been spectacular. Great investment especially since used sets are very inexpensive now.
