Replaced my trusty but now 19-year-old 10Base-T JetDirect 600N (J3110A, released in 1998) with this several-generations-newer gigabit unit to speed up printing and ease control via the embedded web server (EWS). The 600N ran such old Java that it wasn't accessible without setting a Java security exception, even then slow and hit or miss, and was hard-coded to report that it wasn't accessible from Macs. Telnet only, there. Enter the JetDirect 635N (J7961A, mfd. in 2008); job transmission is super fast, it's got 32MB onboard memory for receiving print jobs plus 8MB flash memory for firmware upgrade, and I can now jump right in to the EWS from any browser/platform with nearly instant load to configure and monitor status. Love it. Flashed it up to the latest firmware and expect to never look back. handyPrint running on my Mac home file server (a Mac mini) extended AirPrint capability to my old workhorse (this worked even with the 600N), so I can print to it from iPhone and iPad. Thanks, HP, and thanks, eBay.Read full review

I bought one used to put into a very old printer which has been through a few JetDirect 600n cards, and it works great! This one has been the most trouble free, and appears to use a much more modern chipset. I can verify it works in a Laserjet 4100. I believe it only ran at 100Mbps in that old printer though. (Not that the printer itself could keep up with 1Gbps of data anyway.)

Unfortunately, I haven't gotten around to configuring the printer, etc. so this thing will work again. The printer, even though it is 19 years old, still works perfectly but programming it is like stepping back into the stone age of computers!!!
