I have a small 18 watt boutique amp that I was having problems with. it just didn't seem to have quite enough tone. not enough bass, mids or treble. I had researched different tone stacks, different caps, etc. but didn't really want to mod it that much. as a last resort I tried this Gold Lion tube after reading some remarks about it and looking at some test results. only thing that stopped me was the price. most of the well known tube stores on the web wanted $40+ for it. so, when I saw it for such a lower price I thought "why not?". well, to put it simply, I was amazed at the difference it made. my wimpy $200 squier strat now sounded like it had been possessed by mr. SRV himself nice deep lows without bottoming out, great midrange and sparkly highs. I also put one in my 1972 Fender Quadreverb with similar results. this thing is better than an overdrive pedal. the sensitivity is amazing. this is the cure for a boring pre amp tube.Read full review

watch out for any and all Genalex tubes sold in US, they have been gone through and the best selected out. non of the four 12AX7 met or even came close to transconductance marked on the boxes. if you can buy directly from Russia before the good tubes have been removed, do it.

These tubes work well in this amp. Smoother and more harmonically rich than anything else I've had in. Durability has been good so far. I'm on my second set. Unfortunately I didn't have the same luck with their EL84s I tried. They sounded awesome, but began to red plate and then started cutting out at moderately higher volumes. Tried 3 different sets, no luck. That was a few years ago, so maybe it was a bad run? Might try them again tho. But they may not be compatible with this amp.

WOW!!!! This T12AX7 Gold Lion (Russian) in V1 totally changed my DSL40C!!! Previously, I was running TAD 7025WA's in V1,V2,V3 & V4 with EH EL-34 power tubes. Amp sounded good, but with the gain all the way up, I felt like I still needed more. Enter the Gold Lion: Wow....heavy, saturated gain, so thick and full, I actually was able to turn it down!!!! More presence, more bass, but yet with brighter definition and I had to cut the mids a little, whereas before, with the 7025-WA's, mids were boosted to 10 and more was needed. Biggest single difference yet!!!!

In my quest for tone I've tried many current production 12AX7s (Groove Tubes, JJ, Tung Sol RI, Mullard RI, etc.) as well as NOS tubes in various positions in different guitar amps. While somewhat pricey, the gold pin Genalex Gold Lion is absolutely the best current production 12AX7 I've found for brightness, airiness and clarity. You get what you pay for. While it's hard to beat the sound of good NOS tubes, the Gold Lion's are the closest I've found, at half the cost.
