They're cheap, and practically anything will work in them
If you've looked at modern NAS enclosures, they're expensive and can be complicated. Don't get me wrong, I love my Synology 1815+, but it's a lot of $$ if you just need file storage alone. The MD1000 series is an aging product, and you'll only get 3Gbps out of it (being a late 2000's product), BUT as long as you're running servers with reasonably modern raid controller cards (e.g. Dell Perc 5/6e or better) you can cram whatever drives you want in this thing (including SAS drives, or SATA drives with interposers) for a potentially huge raid 5/6/10, for enclosure costs of under $200. As of this writing, these are a LOT of these units around, and if you just need direct-attached storage that can scale, with basic raid / hot-spare redundancy, buy one of these things for $100-200 with all ... If nothing else, it's a great way to start out and save $$ BEFORE you move to a more modern enclosure, and can make the $$ difference between having a solid DAS file storage with redundancy, or nothing.

Good but noisy
I chose this older server because its size (4U) allowed me to use more specialized full length PCIe cards than newer models. It's heavy and noisy but it does the job. I like the design too.
