This device allows several models of APC UPSs to connect to a network. This is useful for shutting down multiple servers connected to the same UPS. The bundle also includes a temperature sensor, with a generous cord. The LAN port is standard 10/100 Ethernet. It has HTTP, Telnet, SSH and even HTTPS. It even has a WAP compatible server. The onboard modem connects to a phone line and acts as a dialin server (for shutting down and restarting the UPS, even if the LAN is down), and to dial out... but it can only send Pager messages. There is no option for a GPRS modem for SMS notifications. It has two input contacts, and a relay output. I used the input contact with my house alarm: when the siren sounds, the input is triggered and the UPS will send me an e-mail. The output can be turned on ... For example, when the temperature sensor measures 40C, turn on the relay (may be useful to turn on a fan, or alarm). Configuration is a bit tricky: it doesn't have a default IP address, it's picky about DHCP, and your only options are either use the serial port of your UPS, or use the "gleaning" method, described in the manual. Be sure to write down the card's MAC address. Overall, this is a great value for a APC Smart-UPS, but only if you get a used one. New ones are way overpriced.
