I was looking for a small, easy to transport 15w or lower practice amp that if I wanted could also be used for small gig. I have always been partial to Marshall amps but was also looking at Vox, but after much research and listening to a product comparison video on YouTube, I decided to purchase the Fender Super Champ XD (not X2). The sound I heard from the video convinced me that it had the growl I love but could also provide the standard Fender clean. It has a voicing program which allows you to dial in just about any sound you want, which was also a nice option that lead me to go with this amp. The thing I like most about the amp is its sound for its size. It can be very loud for a small amp but doesn't lose any definition at lower volumes. The voicing program is wonderful and allows you to dial in practically any sound you want. I can easily pick it up and carry it from room to room withouth throwing out my back. Another positive is that even for a small amp it can be heard over an aggressive drummer without being mic'd up. The dislike, and it isn't something that makes me say I wish I didn't do this because I knew it going in, is that it's only a 10" Fender speaker (which I replaced with a 10" Eminence Ragin Cajun, which greatly increased and improved the sound). I wish Fender would have manufactured these with a 12" speaker. Wow, that would have been an awsome amp! The other thing I did was to switch out the Groove Tubes for Tung-Sol 12AX7 and JJ 6V6's. The one thing I was thinking about but didn't do was to purchase a larger cabinet that could handle a 12" speaker (they have them on ebay that fit the Super Champ XD). With the changes that I did make in the speaker and the tubes, it is now a very good sounding practice amp that can easily be heard over an aggressive drummer and could be used in small venue gigs. The Fender Super Champ XD compared to other amps in its size is a very good choice, especially when you look at the price tag. The YouTube video I watched when deciding on what amp to purchase compared Vox AC4TV, Fender Super Champ XD, Marshall Class 5 and Blackstar HT5 (was my 2nd choice). Although each amp had s very distinct and imnpressive sound, the Super Champ XD just caught my ear and upon research I found that many others, including recording musicians had used this amp. The only thing is that Fender doesn't build the XD anymore, it was replaced with the X2 which was suppose to be an upgrade and improved product but from what I have read they actually declined in sound. Bottom line is that I was happy with my purchase of the Super Champ XD as it was but I am very happy with it after the upgrades in speaker and tubes and would definately purchase this product again and recommend it to others.Read full review
First, the stock speaker is good but it is only as good as a 10" speaker can be. Is it the best? No, but speakers in an amp are an easy upgrade. Second, it does not give the tube sound of the expensive $800 and up tube amps, yet it certainly gives a sweet, clean, tube amp sound on channel one and you have channel 2 to have the sounds that you might want on a nice little solid state amp, without dragging around all the pedals. Finally, the fact that you can unplug the stock speaker and plug it into a larger cabinet allows for a greater amount of sound variations and the little 15 watt amp will drive almost anything. I have mine going into a 1 X 12" cabinet and the sound is awesome. I only gave it a good rating because of the stock 10" speaker that it comes with.
Okay, first off: I am one of those older dudes who grew up on that classic Fender blackface tone, but I really enjoy today's "modeling" amps. I own a Line 6 and a couple of Roland Cubes, but I usually end up liking the Fender presets anyway, and the solid state power amps just can't cut it when playing live. Enter the Super Champ: Fender tone PLUS some fun models PLUS some decent effects (both the preamp models ad the effects are footswitchable--very cool!) PLUS a tube power amp that can actually handle a basement jam or small club. I'm sure I could get more 'oomph' from my Little Champy by replacing the tubes--Fender is legendary for putting weak tubes in their new amps and biasing them on the low side in order to minimize returns. Ditto the speaker, but I'm pretty happy with it the way it is. UPDATE: After owning this rig for about a month, I did in fact replace the stock speaker with an Eminence Legend. WOW, what a difference! The amp is now about twice as loud as it was before, and this is with the stock tubes!! Definitely a take-out amp now, but one niggle: The new speaker really highlights the "compressed" sound of the high-gain presets. I'm not a metal guy, and you're probably not either if you're reading about a Fender amp, but there are other rigs out there that do the distorto thing better.Read full review
Great little amp. Amazing, big warm sound but with a boatload of EFX and DSP modeling that doesn't sound digital and fake. The clean sound is really fine, due I suppose to the tubes. The sound can be fat and rich but you can also get all kinds of distortion, plus british (aka Marshall) and American sounds too, more sounds than I know what to do with, frankly. Only drawback is that you can't layer various effects, but that doesn't bother me. I'm more about the notes and the rhythms and less about tone, but this amp could make a tone junkie out of me. Very cool and wise use of high-end digital tech at a low-end price. And guess what? The amp's logo looks just like the one on my guitar!
The Super Champ XD delivers the great clear classic Fender clarity of vintage Fender amplifiers, with the benefit of built in DSP effects. For stage work I use a 96 Custom Shop Vibrosonic built for steel quitar (Deep and Sweet Switches instead of Bright). I use the Super Champ XD for rehearsals and jam sessions. I perform everything from 40's to present, which includes surf and 50's 60's instrumentals (Dick Dale, Link Wray, Ventures, Booker T and the MG's etc). The Super Champ XD is great for practice/rehearsals and jam sessions. Light, small, easy to transport. Small stage footprint. Excellent buy for the money. It far outperforms my Fender Hot Rod Deluxe in tone and versatility. I run the Super Champ XD direct out into my Mackie CFX20 Board and JBL SRX815P Mains, The sound is phenomenal. This is an amazing little amp. Fender has a hit with the Super Champ XD. Best Fender buy for the money. I am extremely pleased with the Super Champ XD.Read full review
