I purchased this drive to use the esata connection for creating an external drive to expand the capacity of my DirecTV Genie DVR. I used a 4TB Western Digital Purple Drive (24/7 Surveillance Drive) with this unit. I unplugged my Genie, hooked it up with my Genie with the included esata cable, powered up this unit first then plugged my genie back into power. After starting up it saw this drive and formatted it right away for external use. This allowed me to increase my DVR storage from 1TB of the internal drive to 4TB with the external drive. I love the ability to monitor the temperature and HDD speed on the front panel. I will definitely purchase more of these in the future. I am looking into external drives for my computer. The ability to have the status on the displays greatly makes it worth the cost of building my own external units.Read full review

Bought this external drive enclosure to house a 4TB hard disk. I have experience several external drive failures - which I think is caused by overheating due to inadequate ventilation/cooling. I have encountered no problems at all setting it up and it's simple to use. I'm buying more of this.

I owned one of these for many years, it performed consistently and never gave me problems so I bought a second for a new bulk storage drive. The enclosure is sturdy, the stand holds well, and temps are reasonable though not super given the integral cooling fan. But the enclosure is never hot to the touch. Having the LED is a useful touch as I can monitor temp and drive activity status without using a monitoring tool. This enclosure does well for me on smaller files sizes, about 120 MB/S on USB and 225 on esata. On larger files, 10's of gigabytes, the esata doesn't do as well and I usually go back to USB for larger file sizes. Maybe this is expected, I am no expert on these data protocols! If I needed another one, I would look for the same Rosewill model.

I bought this for several reasons. One, it has a fan that helps keep the hard drive cool. Two, it's eSATA which is fast and dependable. USB is there as well but have not used it. Three, it has a display so I can see temps and that the fan is working. It also claims to have a alarm as well but I haven't heard it but suspect it would work. This thing is faster and certainly more dependable than using USB. I have several other USB enclosures that don't work as good as this. I've been using it a while and it works very well. I haven't had a single problem yet. If you are looking for a enclosure that can handle a 8TB hard drive, this one will. I have a 8TB drive in mine as I type. It works just fine. Also, I'm a Linux user so it works fine with Linux as well. So far, I can't find anything I don't like except that I wish the power switch was at the top instead of the bottom. It would be much easier to get to when reaching over to turn it on. That's the only thing I wish were different. Great enclosure. For the price, it is really great.Read full review

Bought this as a solution to a failed Network Attached Drive unit. The drive was good, the board had failed. The 4TB drive was easily mounted, then formatted XFAT by our MacMini so it could be accessed by both Windows and OS X machines. The enclosure was the perfect way to create an external USB-3 storage unit. In operation, the thermally controlled fan runs as slow or fast as needed. The displayed temperature reads between 85F & 95F (at home in Phoenix AZ). When Idle, the drive sleeps, and there is a red lite to indicate IO activity. There is some noise during operation when sitting atop a wooden file cabinet. A mouse pad takes care of that. I would buy this product again in a heartbeat.
