Worked as advertised and worth the money. Very ingenious. If you were listening for whales I'm sure it would work great. I was trying to find a small leak in an in-ground pool. To test the "hydrophone" I filled a gallon milk jug with water and poked a hole in the side about the size of the leak I thought my pool had (I was loosing about 179 gallons [1/2 inch] a day). I moved the hydrophone around in the jug to try to hear the leak. I found it hard to hear the leak unless I was almost touching it and then it was only a rushing sound slightly loader than the background noise level. Since the earphone cord was a little short for an in-ground pool I added a 16 foot wire. The wire was lamp cord wire and thus thicker than the earphone wire. Thus there was movement of the wire in the putty in the neck of the balloon when in use and there was a slight leak noticed by air bubbles coming up. I could probably have put in extra putty to stop the leak. Getting the unit in the balloon was easy and turning it on an off through the balloon was easy. I've taken underwater video with an underwater sound camera and recorded whales singing. I think this unit would be good for hearing whales (and what other things make noise under water?) but I gave up finding the pool leak using it.Read full review

So far we've listened to water drip, and pebbles drop in a bucket of water. Now we're headed out to hear some WHALES. Bob.
