Japanese antique netsuke, genuinely old, museum quality piece portraying areclining manholding afan.
Inbeautifully patinatedcondition, a finely detailed study which would have been very whimsical when worn.
The netsuke is a suspension toggle that would prevent thepurse or inro (a decorated box container)from slipping.
In this particular example, he would have looked as if he were reclining on the top of the waist sash (obi) or belt.
The detailing is astonishing, he even has tiny teeth and there\'s a beautiful flowing minute signature on the fan.
Noticeably darker patination on the reverse side where he would have been shielded from wear and sunlight.
In all a stunning example of a genuinely old and beautiful netsuke.
It measures 21/4inches across (5.7cm)
