This is a splendid painted panel from a Japanese Folding Screen, orByobu, featuring a pink bloomingSakura, or Cherry Blossom Tree. It was painted bythe renowned and unique artist, Ogata Korin.

Born in 1658 in Kyoto, Ogata Korin was very famous during his career as both a painter and a decorator. He is renowned for his lacquer work and painting on folding screens, decorated with bold designs and striking color contrasts and his masterful use of empty space. This present painting shows the influence of two earlier artists, Koetsu and Sotatsu, but Korin departed from conventional painting, creating his own nearly abstract style. He was also an excellent teacher.

His works are in many collections around the world, including the British Museum, The Metropolitan Museum in New York, the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, the Tokyo National Museum and every important collection in Japan. Several of his works have been honored with the title of \"National Treasure of Japan\".

I believe that this painting is from the late 1600\'s, and that it, along with others, was mounted on aByobu, but with time and use, the original Folding Screen deteriorated and the paintings were removed and carefully conserved in a large kind of portfolio.

In this painting, Korin\'s sense of flat decorative design and his feeling for nature, combined with an abstract color pattern and daring use of empty space, are seen at their very best.

I particularly admire how he has captured the the airiness and fragility of theSakuraBlossoms and, above all, the wonderful abstract color patterns in the trunk and branches where he has used a daring combination ofkindei,a technique of painting with powdered gold leaf in an emulsion, mixed and flowed into and around other colors.

This is a magical painting!

This painting measures 39 inches tall and 22 inches wide. For its more than 300 years oflife, this painting is in very good condition, with no serious damage at all.

For the purpose of this listing, I have mounted it lightly to a neutral grey/green board to show the edges, some of which retain a bit of the gold ground of the originalByobu. (Please see the last photo, which is a detail showing a small strip of this gold.) The painting will be shipped rolled safely in a tube.

This is an extraordinarily fine painting.

The photos give a very good idea of the extraordinary beautyand finesse of this panel from aByobu,or folding screen, with its painting on paper by the celebrated painter, Ogata Korin, from the late 1600\'s in theEdo period.

And thanks for looking.

ThisPanel is350 or soyears old and has passed through many difficult times including two World Wars, the second of which was disastrous for its native country. For an unframed work on such a delicate support as paper , it is remarkable that it has survived at all, let alone in such good condition. But this Panel and similar works of art are not in absolutely perfect condition and they frequently show evidence of their long life. I endeavor to point out if and where there may be any damage, but the photographs tell the whole story. Please examine them carefully. If you are looking for something with absolutely no signs of age, I am afraid you will have to look elsewhere. In short, these beautifulworks were not born yesterday.

I indicate the artist\'s name based on a signature and/or seal and also the style, but occasionally a scroll may be a copy of a work by a famous painter. In the present case, I am sure that the artist is Ogata Korin.

Due to thelimitations of photography and the inevitable differences in monitor settings, the color of the pictures on your monitor may be slightly different from thePanel itself, but I did my best to capture it as it is. And, at least on my monitor, the color is an perfect match.
