This is a mid Showa Era (c. 1960) haribako (sewing box) with a unique arrangement of four drawers with an additional accessible removable section under the lid. Behind this section is a hidden secret sixth drawer that can only be seen and pulled out when the first section has been lifted out of the box (see picture 6).This type of tansu chest was used to store valuables as well as equipment for the person of the house to do repairs on Kimono and bedding as well as money and valuables.

This haribako has a fine-grained mulberry burl wood on the entire exterior. The interior of this chest is made of Japanese kiri (paulownia wood).

The iron hardware has a baked black lacquer finish. With the exception of very minor wear, this chest is in excellent conditionthroughout.
