Height - - 8”
Large, finely woven, polychrome geometrically decorated California Indian basket, probably of Hupa - Karok - Yurok tribal origin.
Early 20th century. Circa 1910 - 1930’s.
Willow, pine root, bear grass, maidenhair fern, and woodwardia.
Beautifully woven gift basket of storage basket form, decorated with seven horizontal rows of positive, negative, and outlined triangles around the basket. About 15 stitches to the inch horizontally in some places near the rim.
AGE: Circa 1910 - 1930’s.
Fair overall condition, as shown in the photos and with the following noted: Two small areas of damage (missing losses) at the top rim. Dark staining to the bottom interior and exterior. Some missing stitches to an area at the bottom foot rim. Several areas of tight breaks, but no missing stitches on the bottom (could have glued repairs).
Please see the photographs to determine the amount of damage. This basket displays well and could use some restoration. It is a large gift basket and would be worth having restored, but displays nicely in the meantime.
The Hupa tribal group lived in the Klamath River areas of Northwest California. The Hupa, Yurok, Karok, Tolowa and Wiyot Tribes make up the Hupa Group. They are known for their fine basketry items and made use of native California hazel, pine root, squaw grass, and maiden hair fern. The Hupa used twining and open twining techniques with false embroidery. Twined hats, trinket, gift, and storage baskets, and large burden baskets all make up the basketry of the Hupa group. There are a number of very famous basket weavers from the area including Elsie McLaughlin and Elizabeth Hickox.
