This photo is an excellent high quality new 8” x 10” black & white photo reproduction of a 1925 MACK Model ‘AC’ Tractor pulling an early lowboy trailer loaded with a BUCYRUS-ERIE 50-B STEAM CRANE/DRAGLINE. A truly CLASSIC Photo!

DESCRIPTION: This photo is why the ‘AC’ MACK gained such a reputation for an almost indestructible ‘workhorse’. This chain drive hard rubber tired MACK has just loaded a humungous load weighing some 60-tons. This BUCYRUS-ERIE 50-B was owned by I. A. GILLESPIE CO., Engineeers & Contractors of New York. Posed on the huge machine, were 2 men on top of the wooden cab with gantry folded down for travel and smoke stack removed, 5 men sitting on the wooden catwalk, 7 more men on the lattice boom, 2 boss men standing to the rear on the blocking used to load this machine on the lowboy, along with numerous onlookers in the background watching what must have been some exciting action as the 50-B crawled up on the hard rubbered tired lowboy trailer. The ‘AC’ MACK was owned by Dalzell or Dalzeli, number #10, with a phone number of Sherwood 2124. While my original photo has “Mack AC 1925” imprinted into the bottom of the photo, Bucyrus did not merge with Erie to make the Bucyrus-Erie Co. until 1927, which may be the correct date of the photo. On the side of the wooden cab are heavy cast iron plaques of “BUCYRUS ERIE” and “Evansville, Ind”. This 8x10 glossy photo has a white border on all 4 sides.

BUCYRUS-ERIE 50-B STEAMER: The 50-B BUCYRUS 50-B was introduced in 1922. It was rated at 2-cy as a shovel, but could also be configured as a dragline, clamshell, and crane. Operating weight was 60 tons, 120,000 lbs. The first steam shovel was invented by William Otis in 1839, but the first full-swing 360º revolving shovel was not developed until 1884 in England. Perhaps the most famous application of steam shovels is the digging of the Panama Canal, where 102 Steam Shovel worked for a decade. 77 of those were built by Bucyrus, with 25 of them being 50-B’s. Steam shovels came into their own in the 1920s with the road building program in North America, but faded from popularity in the 1930s as they became replaced with the simpler, cheaper diesel-powered excavators. The Steam Shovel typically required a 3-man crew: an engineer, a fireman, and a ground man. Today only 3 Bucyrus 50-B’s remain in any sort of condition at museums in CA, CO and MN.

THE MACK ‘AC’: The famous Mack Model ‘AC’ was the truck that made Mack famous around the world, and was known as the “Bulldog” Mack for its rugged dependability in WWI Europe ... a nickname that stuck and gave rise to the phrase “Tough as a Mack truck”. Some 40,200 ‘AC’ Macks were produced from 1916 to 1938, one of the longest production runs of any model truck. Built with a 4-cylinder gas engine and a 4-speed transmission with chain-drive, the ‘AC’ was well suited for tough construction work. The split side-radiator behind the engine, allowed for a sloping hood design and better driver visibility. A ‘motometer’ usually sat atop the center of the rear mounted radiator, for the driver to monitor engine temperature, manually opening and closing the side radiator louvers to cool or warm the engine. Some of these rugged chain drive ‘AC’ Macks were used up into the early 1950s ... hard to believe!
