English Biscuit Box
Vintage silverplated biscuit box with hinged lid and attached saucer base. This piece was made by Mappin & Webb of Sheffield and London England. The lid has a quartered rim and the front of the jar is chased with scrollwork and vines. There is a large vacant cartouche on the front where a monogram could be added if one so desired. The back side of the piece was left undecorated. The jar stands 7 ¾” tall (or 19.7 cm). Measured at the widest point, the saucer base, it has a diameter of 7” (17.8 cm). There is an additional mark stamped on the underside rim of the saucer. This mark is a letter “N” with a cypher; I’m not sure what it denotes. We are including the old anti-tarnish storage bag that this piece was in when we found it.
Condition: This handsome piece is in excellent condition with a brilliant shine and no areas of wear to the silver. There is one small insignificant shallow dent on one side (see photo), but it is not very noticeable. The top knob on the lid has some scratches. There are a couple of small dark spots on the inner floor of the attached saucer base. The hinge on the lid works smoothly, the lid closes tightly, and the interior is very clean. The green flannel pouch has scuffing and fading from years of use, but it has no odors.
