McLEAN TRUCKING GMC \'CRACKERBOX\' #1 & FRUEHAUF 8x10 PHOTO, Winston-Salem, NC
Price: US $9.99

This photo is an excellent high quality new 8” x 10” black & white photo reproduced of a McLEAN TRUCKING CO.’s LATE-1950’s/EARLY 1960s GMC “CRACKERBOX” COE DIESEL TRACTOR Fleet #516 pulling a TANDEM AXLE ALUMINUM SEMI-TRAILER Fleet #4239. This is photo #1 of 2 similar, but different McLean “Crackerboxes”.

”SAMPLE” will not appear on the actual photo, it is only on the scanned image.

DESCRIPTION: This photo reproduction of McLean’s Fleet #516 GMC D Series Tilt-Cab COE Sleeper cab, commonly called a “Crackerbox” is pulling what I believe is a FRUEHAUF Aluminum Exterior Post freight trailer, McLean Fleet #4239, with the McLean ‘diamond’ logo on the trailer ... this once familiar McLean logo was used right up to the end of the company in 1986. The D Series GMC line was produced from 1959 to 1968 when it was replaced with the ASTRO 95. The DL Series cab was constructed of aluminum, and had a rather squared-off design, perhaps giving it the ‘Crackerbox’ slang name. Most of the Crackerboxes were powered with the old standby Detroit Diesel 6-71 in various versions.

HISTORY OF McLEAN TRUCKING CO. - McLean Trucking Co. was founded by Malcolm McLean in 1934 in Red Springs, NC, moving to Winston-Salem in 1943. Through acquisitions McLean grew to become one of the largest trucking companies in the nation, at its peak operating 3,800 tractors and 9,600 trailers out of its 300 terminals in 45 states. It’s growth and competition from non-union carriers was the beginning of the end for McLean. They filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 1986 and more than 10,000 McLean employees were out of work ... another proud carrier gone from the “Golden Years of Trucking” but for the memories.

Founder Malcolm McLean formed McLean Industries in 1955 and pioneered container shipping. He is often referred to as “the father of containerization”, founding Sea-Land Service, Inc. one of the pioneers in intermodal cargo transport.
