Henry Distin Hill was born in St Andrew, Devon 8 July 1865 and entered the Royal Navy aboard HMS Impregnable as a Boy 2nd Class 2 February 1881. Hill joined HMS Wye 1 August 1882, HMS Monarch 19 August 1882, Duke of Wellington 12 December 1882, HMS Royal Adelaide 5 January 1883, HMS Sapphire 31 January 1883 where he was rated Ordinary Seaman 8 July 1883 and Able Seaman 1 september 1885. Hill joined HMS Royal Adelaide 27 July 1886, Cambridge 12 December 1886, Defiance 25 September 1887, Cambridge 5 February 1888, HMS Curacoa 15 March 1888 where he was advanced to Leading Seaman 23 July 1889 whilst Captain of the Gun, reverting to Able Seaman 11 July 1891 on ceasing to be so employed.

Hill joined Vivid 30 July 1891, HMS Swiftsure 11 December 1891, Vivid I 26 July 1893, Cambridge 6 September 1891, Defiance 16 December 1893, Cambridge 1 April 1894, Vivid I 5 May 1894 and HMS Racoon 13 May 1894. Killed in action during the assault and capture of Sokite Village, Kilifi, East Africa 18 June 1895, the Naval Brigade\'s only fatal casualty he was shot during the assault, service record records \'Killed in action\'. In 1895 the East African protectorate (now Kenya) came under British rule, HMS Racoon was operating off the coast from Mombassa to Kilifi and landed 128 officers and men for service ashore at 0700 on 16 June 1895, returning on 19 June.
