Vary rare and original, Complete and 100% original, Model 1902 United States Cavalry McClellan style leather Saddle with shearling wool padding. Please bear with us as we have spent some time trying to identify and date this saddle and have had only a bit of luck with the identification.

This outstanding Fascinating, brown leather military style saddle features a 12" seat and appears to have all associated straps and hardware. All parts are original including the original issue girth, stirrup leathers and guards, forged iron stirrups with original rawhide laced, leather pads. The three brass grommets on the back of the seat retain their original leather straps that we believe were used to secure a bed roll. Much of the shearling padding on the underside of the seat and on the underside of the girth pad remains but there is some loss.

We know very little about this type of McClellan military saddle - it came to us from a local estate identified as a "Civil War" saddle but we believe that it actually dates to the early 20th century. We will add a large number of photographs to this listing in an attempt to show the form, content and condition of this McClellan style saddle.

The McClellan saddle was adopted by the US War Department in 1859 and remained standard issue, in various models, for the remaining history of the horse cavalry. The original M1859 version was the form used during the Civil War, and the design saw subsequent modifications. The saddle always remained recognizable as McClellan's design, which included cavalry and artillery models. In addition, a model for packers was introduced as the M1913.

This wonderful, Model 1904 McClellan Cavalry Saddle is in very good condition. As stated above the Saddle appears complete with all attachments and all parts appear to be original. The leather of the seat and the body of the Saddle is supple and there is no actual damage of any kind to any of the parts. Some of the leathers are somewhat stiff and need a good conditioning and the entire saddle could us a thorough cleaning and reconditioning but, as stated above nothing appears damaged or beyond salvaging. We know a lot about modern English Riding saddles but NOTHING about antique saddles of this type and we ask that you carefully view the photos below to get a good idea of the form and condition of the Saddle being offered here.

A rare and quite wonderful, M1902 United States Cavalry, McClellan style leather Saddle and a fantastic addition to any collection!!!
