Native American Trade Axe as Shown in Ref Book MAKER MARK
"Iconic" style---and rare--will make this piece stand out in any collection of Native American Edged-Weapons.
This was purchased from a 1993 estate sale in Fredericksburg, Virginia.
This is an original Native American Trade Axe as Shown in Ref Book with a Makers Mark. Axe measures 15 1/2" Long x 6" for the head. The axe weighs 2.8 LBS total.
On all of our texts on early edged-weapons. Two of the most definitive are "Swords and Blades of the American Revolution" by George C. Neumann, and "Indian Trade Relics" by Lar Hothem. We've included two photos from these sources. On pg. 262 Neumann shows a round poll hatchet. It reads: "The broad straight-sided flaring blade was common on pipe and hammer-headed tomahawks of the 1800's and is very much like ours and dates it to be around 1750-1820. Wich is easily old enough for use in the Revolutionary War. On pg. 107 Hothem shows an exact match of our axe.
This old trade axe has a very fine quality head-but we cannot guarantee it was made as a weapon. The head shows some nicks consistant w/ period use. The trade axe has a very noticable maker's cartouch struck on the head. The end cap has an old, undisturbed patina and the entire piece has a mellow, aged look.
