This is an outstanding high quality new 8” x 10” black & white photo reproduction of a 1950’s NAVAJO FREIGHT LINES’ INTERNATIONAL LD-405 or RD-405 COE with DROM BOX and SEMI-TRAILER.
”SAMPLE” will not appear on your photo, it is only on the scanned image.
DESCRIPTION: The original photo of this 405 Series INTERNATIONAL with Drom box and semi-trailer was taken in 1954. As you can see, these early 1950s LD & RD-405 cabs sat very high, because of the flat floor in the cab - no doghouse. Cummins HRB-600 diesels were the most popular power at that time, rated at 200-hp. The fenders were hinged to swing out for easy access to the side of the engine. The work on the top of the engine, the passenger’s seat and floorboard could be removed in less than a minute.
HISTORY OF THE INTERNATIONAL 405 SERIES: International’s new Emeryville, CA, plant had started production in 1947, to build a new style western-type truck designed for western trucking. Built with a conventional L-Series cab with a short rounded hood through 1952, then a with the R-Series cab from 1953, these 405 Series were the early predecessor to the famous “Emeryville” DCO-405 COE that ruled the highways in the late 1950s/early 1960s.
HISTORY OF NAVAJO FREIGHT LINES: Navajo began as Red Arrow Transportation in Wichita, KS, in 1934, but changed the name to Kansas City-Los Angeles Flyer Transport. In 1940 the company was purchased by Mitchell B. Howe, who changed the name to Navajo Freight Lines. He commissioned a sign painter to do a portrait of a Navajo Indian for his office. When the painting was done, it was discovered the artist had painted in blue eyes such as no full-blooded Indian has ever had. Instead of changing the color of the eyes, Howe felt the blue-eyed Indian got more attention, and Navajo became known as the “Route of the Blue-Eyed Indian”. In 1953, D. L. Cohen, who had already built Denver-Chicago Trucking into a transcontinental carrier, purchased control of Navajo. Through a series of acquisitions he created the nation’s third largest transcontinental carrier. The acquisition of General Expressways in 1960 with their Chicago to New York authority was the final link. In 1964 David Ratner acquired control of the company and continued to grow to over 5,000 pieces of road equipment operating 67 terminals in 33 states. In 1979, Navajo became part of the Arkansas Best Freight System.
