Hi, Here is a early Hand or Stand Sanderson camera, made in England.

For a generation, this was the favourite camera of Architectural photographers everywhere,

due to its extensive movement including a high degree of tilt and shift.

Format is quarter plate at 4 1/4 x 3 1/4 inches.

This is a very early example, from 1901.

The Hand and Stand model was launched in 1899.

The (much) more commonly seen \"Regular\" and subsequent models came out in 1902, with substantial changes.

I will try to mention the main items which mark out this very early model:

Square Cornered bellows

The wide angle flap in the top of the body is held closed by swing catches from inside

L shaped retaining clips for the focus back

The front standard lock mechanism is very different , without the usual \"bolts\"

No \"cotton Reel\" grip, instead uses a screw in the front standard

Slightly finer graining to the leather covering

Closing catch is straight, not T shaped

the Sanderson badge is made in block letters, not the script version one usually sees.

No mention of Houghton or \"H\" as the maker at this point.

Houghton always marketed the camera for Mr Sanderson, but at this stage the camera was made by Holmes Brothers, of Islington, London

(Holmes became part of Houghton in c.1904)

\"Sanderson\'s Patent\" in block letters on the struts.

Serial number is 2903

This example, being the third version, of 1901, has some further identifying points:

The extension rail is made from wood, with separate brass strips added.

The camera has two fixed bow springs for the infinity lock both marked \"Prov. Patent\".

Lens panel secured with a sliding brass plate.

Closing catch is nickel plated, not brass finish

The badge is actually of the second type, unique to this series of camera

Has nice brass boundBeck Symmetrical lens in Brass B&L Automat shutter.

Slow speeds not working properly on shutter, no damage so might just need a service or clean.

B, T and faster speeds look ok.

Lens not recently cleaned but looks good for the age.

Condition is really nice overall:

Red leather square cornered bellows are very good for the age.

Woodwork is very nice for the age, with original french polished finish.

Leather is nice, good condition with a little rubbing as you would expect.

All the brass work appears in very good condition.

The lacquer is original and has some patination as you would expect.

The ground glass focus screen is in good condition.

There is no swing out finder on the bed, I think this was optional on very early models,

there is a brass plate on the bed in front of where thefinder might sit.

There are some empty screw holes too, maybe a finder was fitted once?

Good tripod mount x2 on the base.

Extensive movements all operate well.

A very attractive and uncommon early Sanderson camera.

Please remember this is a vintage camera, 113 years old.
