Here we have one of Zenith’smost elegant tombstone radios ever produced; The absolutely stunning 1936Zenith model 5-S-29 Long Distance tombstone radio featuring a beautiful walnutcabinet, bright multi color black dial, vernier tuning, stylish trim, wood ‘Z’knobs, and tremendous performance across both the AM broadcast and shortwavebands.

Cabinet:The American Walnutcabinet is just gorgeous. Beautiful wood grain flows throughout the entire set.An elegant burl grain runs across the bottom of the cabinet and really catchesyour eye. A large Art Deco grill not only looks great but allows for optimalsound from the speaker. It all comes together magnificently when powered up andthe brightly lit black dial comes to life shining an array of different colors.Dark walnut trim adds the perfect contrast and finishes the cabinet off withstyle and class. You’ll be the envy of all with this masterpiece proudlydisplayed in any room of your home or office.

Dial/Knobs:One of Zenith’s mostattractive black dials! When turned off the dial is a normal black dial withwhite lettering and numbers. When powered up the dual dial lamps illuminate thedial very bright and displaying an array of colors from red, to green, toyellow. All letters and numbers on the dial are legible and show virtually nosigns of wear. What a spectacular sight! The white ‘Z’ pointer moves nice andsmooth across the entire dial as does its sleek red partner for super fine verniertuning with pinpoint accuracy. The dial glass is clear and free from any chips, breaks, or cracks. All four wood ’Z’ knobs are in perfect shape and control thefollowing: tuning, on/off & volume, tone, and band switch (AM broadcast, shortwave, and now defunct police band).

Grill Cloth: The 1930’s stylegrill cloth is a fine reproduction featuring a classicwhiskey goldcolor with an Art Deco geometric design. This grill cloth can also be purchased separately onour other sales.

Electronics/Chassis: All tubes in the5 tube chassis were tested with any weak tubes being replaced. All caps, filters, and resistors were checked and replaced as needed. All brittle or bare wiring was replaced or re-insulated. The chassis has been cleaned, lubed, and re-aligned for optimal performance. The radio performs exceptionally well on both the AM broadcast and shortwave bands. I\'m able to pull in stations, near and far, across the entire dial with deep rich tone and room filling volume.

The Cabinet’s Finish & Restoration Process: Our Radio cabinets undergo avigorous restoration process. Our goal is to maintain the natural beauty of thewood and grain, while providing a deep luster and shine. We achieve this byremoving all the old and worn lacquers and stains. We then sand the cabinetwith fine grit pads down to the original bare wood. Nicks, chips, and blemishesare filled and/or blended. Any loose veneer is re-secured. We make sure any fillerapplied or repairs made are blended nicely and do not detract from the beautyof the set unless otherwise noted. New stains and sealers are applied by hand.We continue by using many coats of Mohawk brand lacquers and toners applied inthe same manner as when the radio was originally finished in the factory. Weuse a nitrocellulose piano lacquer which is applied through a professional HVLPturbine spray system in a climate controlled room. Nitrocellulose lacquer isvery thin. We also apply very thin coats. This allows the lacquer to seep intothe grain and not cover it up. A fine grit wet sanding follows every third coatalong with a polishing process and ending with an Oz glaze rub. During the restoration process on this radio a few veneer repairs were made to the back edges of the cabinet as well as a thin veneer split on top. All have been filled and / or blended and as you can see, nothing that detracts from the beauty of the set. Many hours ofwork are put into the radios, but as you can see, the final outcome is abeautiful, natural looking cabinet with gorgeous luster& shine. Our radiosare a great piece of history that come to you ready to proudly display, as wellas listen to, in any room of the home or office.
