Tamaqua, A North American Black Bear Cub
Tamaqua is a black bear cub designed and completely made by me, Joanne Livingston of Desertmoutainbear. She is named after a small town in Pennsylvania, not too far from where I now live.
Tamaqua\'s Details:
She is about 20\" (51cms) standing from her feet to the top of her head, ears not included, and 15\" (38cm) sitting. She can stand on her own with a little balancing.
Made of dense imported French Tissavel faux fur. The seller calls the color charcoal grey. It is almost black. I have lightened up some of the pictures slightly so you could see the detail. Some of the pictures look a little brown, she is not brown but grey black. Black bears are hard to photograph. On most pictures especially the one with me, the color seems correct.
Glass taxidermy eyes. Her eyes are very dark brown with a black iris. They are racoon eyes, and give her a younger cubby look.
Leather paw pads with hand sculpted epoxy clay claws
Four way jointed. There is no neck joint, instead there is flexible plastic armature that runs from his head down her back like a spine. This same armature is also in the arms and legs. Her head cannot turn from side to side like a traditional joint allows. It will, however, go up and down, turn, and tilt. This allows for lots of posing positions.
Filled with polyester, wool, and soft pellets. He is softly stuffed for ease of movement.
Her face has been needle felted of wool. There is no pattern used for her face, this makes each bear unique. The wool I use I buy raw straight from the sheep\'s back and wash and prepare it myself. I use a special needle that has barbs to mat the wool and turn it into felt. After the face is sculpted with the wool, I use the same needle to root individual hairs into the felt. The hairs are locked in and do not come out. This is a very time consuming technique. It creates a very natural realistic look.
Her nose has also been felted with a needle and wool. It has been sealed and sanded many times, then finally given several coats of paint to add depth and realism.
Tamaqua has open/sleepy eyes that fold back into needle felted and furred sockets.
She will be sent with a picture hang tag, and certificate of authenticity. Like all of the bears I make his left foot is signed. I do notice in the pictures that her foot has not been signed, it is done now.
Her wintertime accent is wired so that it can be bent around her neck or head.
At least 60 hours of work goes into each and every bear I create. I am a self-taught bear maker and most of the techniques I use I have created myself. I like to think that gives the bears I create a look that is uniquely mine.
