ORIG. 1865 AMES CIVIL WAR “OLD WRISTBREAKER” U.S. Model 1840 CAVALRY SWORD NR

PLEASE NOTE:KINDLY SCROLL DOWN AS WE HAVE POSTED 24 DETAILED PHOTOS OF THIS FINE \"ATTIC FRESH\" CIVIL WAR SWORD!Fresh from a coastal Maine attic, we are pleasEd to offer this honest and untouched example of a signed Ames U.S. Model 1840 Heavy Cavalry sword. During the American Civil War, the sword was sometimes called a “Dragoon Sword”. This example bears the mark of “AMES MFG. CO. CHICOPEE, MASS.”. It was indeed was made in Chicopee, Massachusetts and bears the date 1865 which is likely an arsenal or armory mark.The sword may have been made earlier. Nicknamed the “Old Wristbreaker” because of its heavy weight and considerable length! During the Civil War, the Model 1840 Heavy Cavalry Saber saw fighting from both the Union and Confederate points of view.This specimen is dated “1865” and is in excellent condition. The ricasso reads “U.S./G.K.C. 1865” on its right side. The initials are for military inspector. The pommel also bears the inspector initials G.K.C.. The left side of the ricasso is marked (within a scroll border) “MADE BY Ames Mfg. Co. CHICOPEE, MASS.”. The stamp of G.K.C. stood for the U.S. Government Armory inspector George K. Charter that inspected for the government from 1861-1864 and approved this sword for service. I find no inspector markings on the scabbard.The overall condition of this piece is original and without restoration. All surfaces are consistent on all of the metal surfaces. The original leather and wire tight and original to the sword. The original leather washer is also present. The markings are clear and legible. Blade is complete, original and has no pitting. Scabbard is in uncleaned old surface. There is a small and shallow dimple at one side (1/8th “ in diameter but shallow).A very nice, correct and representative example of an AUTHENTIC CIVIL WAR CAVALRY SWORD!
