from a very prominent 50 yr collection in Washington DC, never seen since it was purchased in 1985 from the original Samual Heim family estate that was located in Berks County PA.
Originallymade andworn by Samuel\'s Heim\'s mother in 1831 as her wedding dress. As you can see in the photos, the bodice is quite detailed with paying special attention to the beautiful Gigot styled sleeves. An off the shoulder
neckline that is fanned across the bustline and the V center created with piping. The very puffed gigot sleeves, also referred to as leg o mutton, help to give the overall appearance as having a narrower waistline. The detailing is created with a quantity of vertical pleats, piping in
between and horizontal straps tabs that are finished in the back of the sleeves. After the extreme puffiness the elbow and lower arms becomes quite narrow and ends with a narrow cuff which is also piped. The homespun linen bodice has much piping including the neckline, armscyes, sleeves, V waistline and a piped center. A back hook and eye closure, some missing. The unlined skirt is attached to the waist with box pleating. A hem that has a very wide brown buckram cotton lining and it seems that the very ends of the hem have
something like cotton batting to possibly create a minimal weighing down the gown. In overall very good very sturdy condition; there is some minimal fading in between the pleating on the puffy part of the sleeves and a very few small discoloration spots. As with all silk gown of the era, a few very minimal very tiny to smaller pinholes are to be expected and.
Approx measurements; Bust 30\" Waist 23\" Skirt length 40\".
