ORIGINAL 1863 CIVIL WAR STORE CARD TRADE TOKEN - OWOSSO MICHIGAN GROCERY STORE
Price: US $46.00
Original, 1863 Civil War Store Card / Trade Token in the form of a small Cent. This great, Civil War Advertising Token measures approx. 3/4\" in diameter and advertises M. L. Stewart - an Owosso, Michigan Retail and Wholesale Grocer.

The Token features an image on the obverse of a bust portrait of the Roman God Mercury with the date 1863 below. On the reverse there is text that reads \"M. L. Stewart / Wholesale and Retail Grocer / Owosso, Mich..\". We believe this Token is designated by collectors as 735B-1a.

Civil War tokens are token coins that were privately minted and distributed in the United States between 1861 and 1864. They were used mainly in the Northeast and Midwest. The widespread use of the tokens was a result of the scarcity of government-issued cents during the Civil War. Civil War \"Store Cards\", like the Trade Token offered here, differ from patriotic tokens in that one or both sides displays the name and/or location of a privately owned business. Businesses that could afford it had two custom dies made, with both advertising the business. Otherwise, only one side displayed the business\'s information.

We are not coin or token dealers and do not know how to grade this type of copper token but have included high quality scans of the token which give a very good indication of the condition. The Token appears to be in very good condition with some light wear to the highest spots of both sides. The strike is crisp and strong and the Token is very attractive.

A rare and original, 1863 copper Civil War Store Card Trade Token and a fantastic addition to any collection!!!
