Very rare and original, 1908 (or earlier) 13 Star American Flag / United States Navy Ensign issued from the Navy Yard of New York. This outstanding larger size American Flag / Navy Ensign measures approx. 64 1/2\" by 35 1/2\" and is made of strips of red and white woven wool bunting type cloth with a blue canton with individually sewn white stars (stars are applied on both sides of the flag back to back. The Flag is machine stitched and expertly made.
There are metal grommets on the hoist of the Flag which are each marked \"No. 0\" and \"Patented Aug 28, 1884\". There is original stenciled lettering on the hoist which reads \"U. S. Ensign No. 7 / Navy Yard New York / Feb 1908\". There is also a 5 digit number which we can not decipher although the first digit appears to be a \"7\". The canton measures approx. 28\" by 17 1/2\" (approx. 1/2 of the hoist). The 13 stars are arranged in five staggered rows from top to bottom of 3,2,3,2 and 3 stars.
The Flag came to us without information on its origin other than the markings on the hoist - we would greatly appreciate any information regarding the History of this beautiful American Flag / Naval Ensign.
The Flag is unconditionally guaranteed original and of the period 1890 to 1908 - it is NOT a reproduction, reissue, commemorative or of modern manufacture but an original, turn of the 20th century American Flag.
This wonderful, ca1908 American Flag / U.S. Navy Ensign is in very good condition and displays beautifully. The colors are muted as manufactured and there is no significant fading and no staining or discoloration. There are five small holes in the blue wool bunting of the canton as can be seen in the scans below as well scattered holes in the red and white stripes. There is a 3 3/4\" tear (with a small amount of lost fabric) between the bottom two stripe near the Fly end but that tear does not communicate to the reinforced strip that makes up the fly end. There is what appears to be a patch at the hoist end of the lowest stripe although this might be an original reinforced area that was part of the Flag as originally manufactured. Overall this 106+ year old Flag is very well preserved and displays beautifully.
