Original third liberty loan bond poster World War I WW1 US Flag Army Signed 1918
Price: US $67.66

Original 1918 lithograph poster. Reads “Remember! The flag of liberty. Support it!” at the top. “Buy US government bonds. 3rd Liberty Loan” at the bottom. Bottom margin notes “6-A” and “Heywood Strasser & Voigt Litho Co NY”. Measures 20” wide x 30” high. Back has very old “Ex libris - Alexander Thomas Leonard Jr. Medical reserve corps, United States Army, San Francisco, CA” stamps, and appears initialed and dated by Alexander Thomas Leonard (very cool ATL signature). There’s some information about ATL Jr online about serving with distinction in WWI and being an important contributor to California historical societies.

Condition: Needs a little TLC but is a great piece to work with in restoring. The litho is nice and bright and shows very little image wear (a bit at the creases in the main gentleman’s hair). It has quite a few partial seam splits at side & center creases, particularly in the lower half. I’ve focused on the worst split in the photos, lower right side which ends in a 2” upwards tear. The good news is I see no paper loss aside from the pin holes in the border, so I believe it would recover quite decently if restored. A great historical piece even displayed as-is.

History: This poster supported the Third Liberty Loan (war bond drive) held in spring 1918, six months before the end of the First World War. The image & caption are meant to appeal to recently arrived immigrants from Europe, and prompt them to repay their debt to the United States by buying bonds.
