JOHN W. NORTON (1876-1934)
Description The message of Norton\'s poster is utterly straightforward and instantaneously effective: the bloodied jackboots of German tyranny must never be allowed to run rampant on American soil the way they had over nearly the entirety of Europe. Certainly our boys in the faraway trenches were doing their damnedest to make certain that this unthinkable future never occured, but what could the Everyday Joe back in America do to help out? The answer was as obvious as Norton\'s warning: \"Buy more Liberty Bonds\" in the Third Liberty Loan initiative. \"The opening day of the Third Loan . . . was the first anniversary of the American declaration of war and it was designated a holiday in virtually every state . . . The most financially productive exploit of this campaign was brought about through a challenge by the president. Wilson announced that even though he already had overextended himself in purchases of Liberty Bonds, he would still subscribe for yet another fifty-dollar bond . . . He called on all patriotic Americans to \'match\' his effort . . . The results of this effort to \'Match the President\' in financial sacrifice exceeded $100 million in bond subscriptions. In all, more than eighteen million citizens invested in this campaign\" (Rawls, p. 208). Norton was a muralist and easel artist, born in Lockport, Illinois. Originally, Norton studied law at Harvard University, but this pursuit came to an abrupt end when the family\'s firm went bankrupt. Before and after a period of living as a cowboy and enlisting with the Rough Riders, he studied at the Art Institute of Chicago.
