A very helpful self described \"old fisherman/collector\" contacted me and said that these reels are convertible to left hand wind. The process is somewhat complicated but the key parts are made of spring steel and not easily damaged. The reel schematics are available on-line. He also described how to adjust the drag. I will gladly pass this information on to the new owner upon request.
