A rare pair of Canadian trade silver armbands made during the late 18th century for the Native American market by
Montreal silversiths, Cruickshank and Arnoldi.

Each cuff with two hallmarks “CA” stamped between attachment holes.

Handmade rolled and hammered silver (not marked for silver purity, but ‘800’ (800/1000) or better.

Exteriors decorated with simple rocker-engraving along the inside of thin (3/16” / 0.5 cm) repousse - raised borders along the edges. Four round holes for leather or cord attachment ties present on the ends of each armband. Scribe marks can be seen near the drilled attachment holes. Possibly the engravings and holes were made at a later date by the Native American users.

You can find examples of the trade silver made by Cruickshank and Arnoldi, including an armband and a cross bearing their hallmark, at the National Gallery of Canada website by searching their name on the site.AGE: Circa 1784 - 1789  /  18th Century. CONDITION:

Good condition, as shown in the photos and with the following noted: The silver has a tarnished, darkened patina on both the interiors and exteriors. Crevices and recessed areas show a darker patina, almost black. Wear to the exterior of the attachment set holes that were the underneath set on each armband. One attachment hole appears to have been cut or altered (squared - see photos). Overall wear to edges and surfaces. One small split to edge (1/16”) on one armband and two small splits (1/16”) to the other.
