The Games

Panzer General
Panzer General possesses magnificent graphics for a wargame of 1990s vintage. The units are easily recognized thanks to the special attention given to detail, and the strategic maps where the forces advance from are of impeccable quality. This CD version of the game adds bonuses like authentic video-footage from the WWII archives, and CD quality sound for music and sound effects. Of course, these features are expected in modern games. However, in 1994, such audio/video attention for a wargame was exceptionally rare.

Harpoon II
Harpoon II Battleset 2: West Pack
Harpoon II Battleset 3: Cold War
Harpoon II is a simulation of modern-era naval combat. A variety of ships such as surface and sub, as well as missile weapons and aircraft must be tracked and accounted for when engaging in battles. It is a single player game, and takes place in real-time (though you can set the clock ratio to suit your needs and even pause the game).

Rather than being a straight Cold War-style U.S.S.R. vs the USA game, Harpoon II\'s scenarios are mostly based on third-world encounters, such as USA vs North Korea, or Peru vs Ecuador, etc. Sometimes the sheer volume of detail can be overwhelming; this game is not recommended for casual wargamers. You take charge of a naval force composed of either few small ships armed with only cannons and light rockets/missiles, or an entire carrier strike force with it\'s own air force and long-range cruise missiles.

Battleset 2 includes 5 scenarios focusing on the Western Pacific and Southeast Asian countries. Battleset 3 brings 16 new naval scenarios for use with Harpoon, 3 main allignments of allies: East vs. West, West vs. Arab, Arabs vs. Israelis, Countries included: Egypt, France, Greece, Iraq, Israel, Italy, Libya, Syria, Turkey, US, USSR. Over 60 new platforms, including hydrofoils, helicopter cruisers, attack helicopters, German-type 209 Submarines, and Mirage Fighter Bombers.

V for Victory: Utah Beach
V for Victory: Market Garden
The V for Victory series set a new standard for computer wargames when the first chapter was released in 1991. It was, and remains, one of the most complete, accurate, and realistic simulation of large scale WWII ground combat ever produced. Yet V for Victory is logically organized and relatively easy to grasp. Each chapter sports a great AI, interface, with plenty of units and historical variants. Even today the turn-based V for Victory series should be a part of every wargamer\'s collection.

Genghis Khan II
Conquerors need to be calculating, charismatic, and cunning, as well as courageous. This is as true for modern politicians, managers, military officers, and business competitors as it was for the rulers and kings of the past. Koei\'s accurate historical simulations offer a pleasant and effective medium to learn those lessons. Victorious players in these complex competitions must learn to blend economic management, diplomatic manipulation, and strategic maneuvering into a rare mix of personal effectiveness.

Romance of the Three Kingdoms III
The concept is the same here as in Koei\'s other wargames: conquer all you can! In this case the historical setting is ancient China. The country is under the control of one Emperor, but all of the faction leaders want to be the emperor themselves. You begin with one territory and you must conquer more to win the game. Play any one of 33 rulers and attempt to conquer China in six historically accurate scenarios.

Operation Europe: Path to Victory
The game is an historical simulation of the European and North African theaters of World War II. The game allows up to two players to role-play as Army commanders for either the Axis or Allied forces. This game emphasizes the military aspects of the war and leaves diplomacy to the politicians.

High Command
High Command is a grand game of war and resource strategy set in Europe in 1939. As either the Allied or Axis side, you will be fully responsible for all of the military, economic, and political decisions for your side. Should you allocate your resources to military units immediately or should you invest in your country\'s infrastructure first? Do you allocate resouces to sabotage or to negotiation? Once war is waged, the player has complete control over all land, air, and sea forces anywhere in the European theater. Playing as the Axis powers, the player truly has the ability to fight a completely different war if he/she chooses. There need not be an Eastern front if you decide against it. Economic optionsin High Command include production and research and development to give the player the flexibility to determine the course of weapons development and usage. Political options include diplomacy, intelligence, and foreign aid. Again, it\'s possible to develop entirely \"anti-historic\" alliances in WWII depending upon your decisions and goals. High Command also features flexible weather conditions, the ability to adjust Allied and Axis intelligence, and a also a strong computer AI.

Command HQ
Command H.Q. is one of those war games you can play when you\'re too fuzzed-out to wrestle with anything fancy, when you want to turn a novice on to computer war-gaming without overload, or when you just don\'t have the time for a six-hour-long campaign. It falls squarely in the time-honored beer-and-pretzels tradition of Risk, although it is, to be sure, a much more sophisticated game.

Steel Panthers
Steel Panthers is, even today, a rock solid WWII squad level tactical simulation. At this level, squads consist of approximately 10 men and vehicles are represented individually. The map scale used is 1 hex = 50 yards which is roughly equivalent to the board games Squad Leader and Advanced Squad Leader. The similarities don\'t stop here. Steel Panthers uses a turn based board game paradigm for play. Each player takes turns maneuvering and firing their units while the computer takes care of housekeeping. By taking this approach, SSI removed enough complexity so that the average player will enjoy the game. However, they left in enough detail to attract the avid board gamer.

Wargame Construction Set II: Tanks
Tanks! offers limitless small scale tactical armored confrontations using the various tanks and tools of mechanized warfare from 1918-1991. The random scenario generator allows you to create a custom map. Choose one of three climates, pick opposing forces, and assign objectives. In addition, there are over 20 ready to play historical scenarios and a campaign feature included.

Clash of Steel
Clash of Steel was made for those looking for an in-depth wargame that covers the entire spectrum of the European theater in World War II but don\'t want to invest months completing it. The entire war (on both European fronts) can be completed in less than ten hours assuming you\'re not a novice. The number of turns run from two to eleven with \"phased\" increments equaling two months of real time across a map that is displayed in hefty fifty mile hexes. Even though the interface accommodates both mouse and keyboard, there\'s no doubt that using the former is the way to go. Simply click on a unit followed by the desired destination and just that easily your movement is executed. It\'s even simpler on air strikes. Select the target, then the strike command, and the nearest available air unit will attempt to carry out your order. Of course, hex-by-hex movement is still an option if you like to ride with your troops across the multi-faceted, realistic terrain. The game fairly represents both sides of the conflict so if you\'re hankering to rewrite history with a German victory, go for it! The challenges offered by Clash of Steel are steeply ingrained with tons of accurate logistical information, equipment, forces, weather considerations, personnel and optional campaign lengths (six different start dates are supported).

Note: My compatibility CD does not alter the retail game or bypass copy protection. It allows the original media to install and run correctly on any recent version of Windows.
