Querida aka Bassick Colorado Mining Ghost Town real photo 1918 RARE
Price: US $27.12

RARE postcard showing the mining town of Querida aka Bassick, location identified in the message on back. Querida is now a GHOST TOWN. Real photo used 1918, canceled Silver Cliff Colorado. Sharp focus, condition is good due to a missing corner tip that really does not affect the mining image. In 35 years of collecting Colorado postcards, this is the only card I have ever seen from Querida so I\'m calling it RARE, perhaps one-of-a-kind amateur photograph as the image it does not have any studio attribution.

Querida, also known as Bassick and Bassick City, was established in 1877. One source calls it a \"company town\" of the Bassick Mine, a very productive silver and gold mine for a brief period. By 1881 Querida had an estimated population of 500 and that grew to 1,000 by 1882. The value of silver was being kept high by the Federal Government buying it, even though we came off silver as a basis on our currency in 1873. One the country stopped supporting silver and made gold the basis of our currency, western silver mining activities slowed. Querida was abandoned in 1906, leaving much of the equipment in place. Some mining activity resumed in the 1917-1920 period, which is the period of this postcard\'s image. I is now a GHOST TOWN. Querida was located in Custer County, about 5 miles east of Silver Cliff and 6 miles east of Westcliffe. A google search will yield a few photos of the town site as it appears today.
