Description:

!!!Recently discovered in aMaine attic, wearepleased to offerthis RARE & ORIGINAL circa 1880 cased mahogany & brass FULL PLATE wooden TAILBOARD box camera, COMPLETE with an ALPHONSE DARLOT brass lens.

The brass lens is marked "DARLOT - PARIS" and "B.F. & CO.". Alphonse Darlot was a maker of QUALITY lenes that were mass produced in Paris in the years 1860 to 1893. The BENJAMIN FRENCH & COMPANY (B.P.&CO.) were located in Philadelphia. They were the OFFICIAL United States importers of Darlot lenes until 1893. The lens has a threaded brass cover, it is mounted to the removable wooden plate and the lens measures 2 3/4\'\' in diameter.

The mahogany tailboard camera is unmarked. It features brass hardware to include adjustment and focusing knobs, pleated leather bellows and is COMPLETE with its ORIGINAL FULL PLATE (6 1/4\'\' x 8 1/4\'\') ground glass screen. The camera is also being sold with double 5\'\' x 7\'\' book-style dry plate holder along with other accessories (see pics). The camera is housed in a period velvet lined box made from an old SOAP advertising box. These types of "home made" boxes were common among field photographers during this time. Overall the camera measures 14 3/4\'\' tall, when fully extended in measures 21\'\' long (8 1/2\'\' long when collapsed) x 12 1/4\'\' wide.

CONDITION: Mechanically the camera appears to be in excellent condition. There are NO visible scratches to the lens and all the adjustment knobs are free turning. The bellows are dry, but stable having only small corner tears in the folds. Please review our many photos accurately represent the exterior condition of the camera.
