RARE CIVIL WAR PERIOD BELT KNIFE TARRED CANVAS SCABBARD HAND FORGED 1858 CENT
Price: US $214.37

Presented for thecollector of Civil War edged weapons is this enigmatic side knife of a most unusual form with some very compelling characteristics. This knife is in untouched, uncleaned, as-found condition with a wonderful patina. This knife exhibits some fascinating characteristics and shows real patination and age. It has been in a collection for about 50 years. The knife itself has an overall length of 11 1/2 inches and the 6 1/2 inch blade is of the spear point variety. This blade form really has only one practical purpose and that is thrusting or stabbing in a hand-to-hand fight. It will do other things, but that is what it is made for. It is quite sharp. The hand forged guard is exceptional and unique in my experience. It consists of four branches that have been swept upward to converge at the ricasso of the blade. A larger, iron, secondary guard which is ovoid in shape adds further protection to the hand. The hilt itself is of stacked leather washers. Yes, this is not typically encountered until the early 1900\'s in commercial pieces, but I have found no reference as to when this type of handle style made its advent. The pommel cap is an 1858 Flying Eagle Cent through which the tang has been peened. The Flying Eagle cent was in rather nice shape when this was made; thus, one can conclude that would date the knife to the 1860\'s or 1870\'s. The scabbard is made of wood which has a tarred canvas covering. Yes, anyone familiar with Civil War arms and accoutrements would unhesitatingly declare that to be characteristically \"Confederate.\" Thus, you can readily see the \"enigmatic\" nature of this knife! If the handle was a little different it would be on a table for $2,500 at Baltimore or Nashville. Regardless, it is a most unusual knife made with a purpose in mind and would compliment any collection of Civil War or frontier edged weapons. !
