Rare Colonial American Sterling silver Taperstick Edward Winslow 1740 Georgian
Price: GB $1582.79

We are offering for sale a very rare opportunity to buy an early piece of American silver.

This silver taperstick bears the EW mark of Edward Winslow to the underside and to the capital. The mark is shown in \"American Silversmiths & their Marks\" by Stephen G.C. Ensko on page 34 - the middle of the 3 marksillustrated for Winslow. Also in \"Handbook of American Silver & Pewter marks\" by C. Jordan Thorn on page 224 - the 3rd of the four marks shown for Winslow.

The hexagonal base and baluster knopped stem is typical of the type made in England during the 1720\'s. There appears to be cancelled marks inside the base, so it is likely that this taper stick was eitherimported in to the USA in the 1720-40 period and re-marked or used as a model to cast further examples.

Edward Winslow (1669-1753) was an important early colonial silversmith working from Boston, Massachusetts in the early to mid-18th century.

A very similar pair of candlesticks bearing Winslow\'s mark can be seen in the on-line catalog of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts (assession number 1983.162). The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York also have a pair of Winslow candlesticks that can be viewed online.

As mentioned on the MFApage, many early USA candlesticks (tapersticks were made in the same manner) were imported from the UK, the marks effaced and colonial touchmarks added. Or, as per the pair of Myer Myers candlesticks in the Cahn collection that have traces of London marks, they werecast from an imported model.

Tapersticks were an essential piece of desk equippage throughout the Georgian period and were used for melting the waxto seal documents and letters. They were supplied either singularly or in pairs.

This is a fine quality taperstick with a good solid feel in the hand. It is in excellent condition.
