RARE etched c.1860 Sheffield BOWIE KNIFE \"S.S. Brittain\" Knight MARK- STAG gripsMarked \"S.S. BRITTAIN & Co.\", featuring a wonderful Knight with a lance, fighting a Dragon.
Very unusual etched maker\'s mark, not stamped at the base of the blade.This mark is recorded in the text \"Sheffield Bowie and Pocket Knife makers 1825-1925\" by Richard Washer, on pg. 25 (pictured).
This mark is dated to 1860, likely to be imported during American Civil War.The blade is hidden tang with fine caramel stag.
The stag handle is darkened with original patina, some older surface chips near the cross guard.
Guard and pommel are nickel silver.Sheffield made clip point blade measures just under 7 inches.
Knife is a nice size at 11.5 inches overall.
An great example of a Sheffield Civil War era Bowie Knife, in fine condition with an unusual and exciting etched mark.
