This 109+ year old decoy was made by the Mason Decoy Factory in Detroit, Michigan and isaGlass Eye,"PREMIER GRADE"DRAKE CANVASBACKDuck Decoy. ThePremier Grade or Modelwas theirTop-of-the-Line, Bestversionof wood decoy and was made with outstanding quality control and unsurpassed craftsmanship. It was carvedhollow and hand-made and hand-painted not long after the turn of the century, although this Drake Canvasback decoy up for sale is a special order, solid-bodied version. ThisPremier-Grade, Solid-Bodied Canvasback decoy up for sale was what some people special ordered as an answer to the inherent problem of the lighter and semi-round decoy to roll, sailand pitch in rough open water. If heavily enough weighted, it worked, because inherently it sat lower in the water because of the increased weight. Th major issue that open water hunters historically had with any Mason decoy was the rolling that occurred because of the round body, particularly on the standard and challenge models. Although the "flatter" bottom of the premier partly negated the poor swimming performance, the Premier body is stillvery round and still suffered from the fairly high center of gravity that all of their decoys posses. Hence, this premier canvasback up for sale was one of those special ordered solid bodieddecoys, and as a further attempt to make this a superior performer, the owner weighted the decoy by drilling a 1" diameter hole in the bottom and poured in melted lead for the decoy's ballast weight. The form of this premier also somewhatresembles the special order, Back Bay Virginia models that were ordered fro Mason. These Back Bay models were also often solid bodied as the model was requested and made in another attempt to create a Mason decoy that could deal with waters once they became turbulent and often approaching "white caps". The Back bay model, however, had a much larger body than this premier grade special order up for sale.

This decoy up for sale is the Premier Grade, and below that was the Challenge grade, whichwas the upgrade to the standard grade models, although the Challenge was available as a hollow decoy on a special order basis. The challenge grade was similar in style to the Premier grade but slightly smaller. The Challenge grade also hada carved in bill/head separation, mandibles and nostrils but not a nail like this Premier Canvasback up for sale. ThePremier Grade Canvasbackslike this decoy up for sale had thetypical swirling paint brush patterns and marks and the Incredible Feather Curl Detail Paint to on the back feathers and tail feathers. Also, awesomely detail painted in side feather panel border!.

All of these wonderful Mason decoys, including this Premiergrade Canvasback up for sale, were hand-made and hand-painted not long after the turn of the century. Of the severalwood decoy factories in Detroit, Mason would outlive them all and have a persistent 30 year existence. This decoy is structurally inoutstanding original condition and as you can see this decoy retainsawesome brush marks and paint swirls from the day an artist painted it some 100 years ago; even the Breast Scalloping. This beautiful breast scalloping edge paint isvery niceand not allMason canvasback decoyswere afforded this beautiful detailing, and this decoy was also finished with back feather curls and tail feather paint detail. Although, any way you look at it, this decoy is one of themore uniquesolid-bodied, drakecanvasbacks and one thatyou come across once in a great while.

THE HIGHLIGHT TO THIS DECOY ID THE SOLID-BODY CONSTRUCTION WITH A HEAD THAT IS AS SECURE & TIGHT AS THE DAYTHAT THIS DECOY WAS MADE!! EVEN THE ORIGINALRED GLASS EYES ARE PERFECTLY INTACT AND IN IN PERFECT CONDITION!!

This decoy displays wonderfully and based on condition, I am sure that this decoy was prominently featured inacollection and it hasalways beeninprominent collections thathad temperature-controlled environments. TheBeautiful, Antique & Original DeepRed Glass Eyes are perfectly intact andthe awesome and antique red glass eyesare perfectly intact and in excellent condition. This decoy is as solid as the day it was made with no looseness in the neck whatsoever and the decoy is in excellentand perfect originalcondition other than amedium-sized checkon the belly, a small chip on the tailand obvious rubbing to the surface paint from usage, butI personally think that they add to the look of this antique decoy. Additionally, this decoy is inoutstanding original conditioncondition withbeautiful and fully intact originalpaint as you can see in the pictures, and overall it is very dry and nice old and original paint witha beautiful and naturally burnished sheen to it from being handled over the years.Theoriginal paintwas done extremelywell and as you can see by themany photos, many of thefamous Mason Paint Brush Marks and WonderfulDetail Featheringisvisible, especially in theside panel feather border, back feather detail, tail feather detail,as well as the awesomely scalloped breast paint detail. This excellent and significant decoymeasures 17" long x 6-1/2" wide x 7" tall and weighs a somewhat hefty2-lbs. 13-oz. An outstandingdecoy that will complement any collection of vintage duck and shorebird decoysfrom acompanythatrepresents asbig a part of American Decoy Historyas any other makeror carver.
