RARE ORIGINAL ROME, WATERTOWN, & OGDENSBURG BELL BOTTOM RAILROAD LANTERN This lantern is from the 1800's. The railroad began operation as the RW&O in 1861 and was formally merged into the New York Central on April 12, 1913. The RW&O was nicknamed "Hojack". According to an old engineer in the early 1870's a man named Royal and one John Tobin were employed by the RW&O in running trains between Lewiston and Suspension Bridge. It was the habit of Royal after delivering his cars to the bridge and we he was ready to return to stand at the office door and call out to his partner "Ho, Jack, time to be going back". When Royal's train would appear the railroad workers would say, "Here comes the hojack". The top of the lantern is stamped Steam Gauge & Lantern Co. Syracuse, N. Y. The rim of the lantern is stamped R. W. & O R. R. The oil pot and burner are present. The burner has some brass around the top. There is no wick. The bell bottom has a minor crease and some pitting. The globe is a clear tall globe and has a large crack near the top.
