This is a rare printed postcard of a summer scene at the Pictoucoal-mining ghost camp. It was located near Walsenburg, Colorado, in HuerfanoCounty. The camp produced 1,000 tons of coal a day during its prime. The imageshows the camp with the overhead trestles and power plant. It was serviced by aspur of the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad from Walsenburg. The card waspublished by the Colorado Supply Company, a subsidiary of the Colorado Fuel& Iron (CF&I) Corporation that owned and operated coal and limestone mines inColorado, New Mexico, Wyoming, and Utah. Miners were paid in scrip that theycould only redeem at the Colorado Supply Stores. In my experience (nearly 40years of buying and selling Colorado postcards) these cards are rare and notfully appreciated by collectors. I know I was always happy to find themregardless of the price. Many of the towns in which Colorado Supply stores arenow ghost towns; in some cases post office cancels (DPOs) are very rare anddesirable. This card was mailed from nearby Morley (DPO; SI 1) in April 1909 toMarysville, Kansas. It is in good to very good condition (see scans forcondition). This will make a great addition for a person who collects Pictou,Walsenburg, Huerfano County, Colorado Supply Store, CF&I, coal mining, ghosttown, and/or Colorado postcards.
