RARE UNKNOWN CIVIL WAR BRASS HILT SABER BAYONET YATAGHAN BLADE UNMARKED
Price: US $92.58

Presented for thecollector of Civil War-era bayonets and edged weapons is this enigmatic bayonet which I have never encountered before. This bayonet was a recent purchase from a very old collection. It is in excellent condition. There is some very light pitting to the blade, but the spring for the retention catch still has quite a bit of blue. It was probably stored in a scabbard (now missing) thatbecame damp and was cleaned years ago. The bayonet is very similar in form and configuration to the U. S. Contract Rifle Model 1863 bayonet otherwise known as the \"Remington Zouave.\" This bayonet; however, is unmarked in any way. It does bear indicators of having been manufactured by Collins & Co. of Hartford, Connecticut, which is the firm that manufactured the bayonets for the \"Remington Zouave.\" The biggest indicator of that supposition is the steel cross pin which assists in securing the hilt to the blade. If I am not mistaken, Collins & Co. was the only U. S. manufacturer of saber bayonets to employ this feature. The principal differences between this and a \"Remington Zouave\" bayonet lie in the lack of markings and the fullers on the yataghan-style blade. I just acquired a minty \"Remington Zouave\" bayonet and made side-by-side comparisons. The fuller on this specimen has decidedly pronounced shoulders in the fuller as opposed to the lack of shoulders in the fuller of a \"Remington Zouave\" bayonet. It looks and feels more square than round. There are also several visible casting flaws in the hilt. The orientation of the muzzle ring is slightly different as well. In this specimen, the bottom of the muzzle ring is even with the flat of the hilt whereas on a \"Remington Zouave\" bayonet there is a pronounced step. The spine of the blade is flat on this specimen as opposed to rounded on a \"Remington Zouave.\" The blade length is 20 inches and the overall length is 24 3/4 inches. I believe I read somewhere that Collins & Co. alsoproduced saber bayonets for esoteric American arms and foreign imports on contract. One could speculate about this bayonet at length. Perhaps it is a prototype piece for the Remington Zouave contract. Perhaps it is a production overrun; thus, the lack of inspectors markings. Perhaps it is an esoteric state contract piece? The possibilities are manyfold. This would make a very interesting addition to any collection of Civil War bayonets or martial edged weapons.
