RARE~ANTIQUE (1950’s)~IVAN DENTON FOLK ART WOOD CARVING~(SIGNED)~NR
Price: US $76.00

Up for sale is an early folk art woodcarvingby one of the most notable woodcarving artists of the Ozarks, Ivan Denton. Typicalof Denton’s early 1950’s work, this woodcarving depicts a “Hillbilly Toting A Rolling Pin” and always reminded me of Granny on the \"Beverly Hillbillies\" television show of the 60\'s. The base is signed on the bottom “Hand Carved in the Ozarks oflinden (wood) ~ I. Denton.” The piece measures 4\" (base-bottom to top ofhead) x 2 1/2\" (rolling pin handle to left arm @ the elbow).

Woodcarving or whittling refers to “the makingof useful things.” It is a folkway art with roots deep in the heritage of thepeople of theOzarks of Arkansas and parts of southern Missouri. In the heyday of whittling, pocketkniveswere given to boys at a young age as a rite of passage.Ivan Denton, a pioneeringOzark woodcarver specialized in wildlife and Western scenes, and was one of themost prominent woodcarving artists in Arkansas. Denton never had any formalartistic training but took up carving in the 1930s because he, like most boysin the Great Depression, often made his own toys.
