DESCRIPTION: This H60T/H61T Mack tractor is parked on a downtown city street, perhaps right in New York City ... notice the hotel doorman talking to the two men across the street. With cab tilted forward, this brand new, still shiny tractor is hooked to a similarly brand new and shiny Fruehauf semi-trailer, ready to have its new features shown to a prospective buyer. While this photo is undated with no information, I believe this to be an H60/H61 version rather than the later H63, because of the the 1’ gap between the top fender step and the bottom of the door ... the H63 was lowered 1’ with the bottom of the door very close to the top fender step. Whether this is a gas or diesel model, I can not tell. At any rate, it must have made a pretty unusual sight in 1953 and turned many a head! This photo is a full 8x10 with no borders.

HISTORY OF THE H MODEL MACK: In 1953 a completely new line of cab-over-engine highway tractors was introduced by Mack. The H60 Gas/H-61 Diesel were powered with 170-hp Mack Thermodyne gas or diesel engines. The main features of these new models was their short BBC which allowed them to haul 35’ trailers in 45’ states. The problem of engine access so common in other large COE’s of that time, was solved by using a hand powered mechanical winch to tilt the cab forward, uncovering the engine and its accessories for servicing. Extensive use of aluminum alloy in various components made these tractor lighter than competitive models. At over 10’ high, these H-60/H-61 tractors were often referred to as “Cherry Pickers”. Shortly after introduction, these tractors were modified in 1954 to lower the cab height by 1’, and designated H-62T and H-63T Models. Only 81 H-60T gas models were produced from 1953-1954, and 484 H-61T models from 1952-1957. One single order placed by ROADWAY EXPRESS accounted for 124 of these H-61T tractors. In comparison, some 4,000+ H-63 models were produced from 1954-1958 when the H-67 replaced them. In total, some 12,200+ H Models were produced in various configurations between 1952 and 1966.
