DESCRIPTION: In 1954, ROADWAY EXPRESS, INC. of Akron, Ohio, put 124 cab-over-engine MACK H-61T road tractors. With just 80-5/8” BBC with their optional integral sleeper cab, these new Macks could pull 35’ semi-trailers in the 23 states in which Roadway was then operating. These H-61T tractors were powered with Mack’s Thermodyne Diesel engine. Carroll Rouch, president of Roadway Express is quoted in the ad. Also quoted and pictured in the lower left of the ad, is Joseph J. McCluggage, a veteran Roadway driver with 12-years of accident driving.

HISTORY OF THE H60/H61 MACK: In 1952-53 a completely new line of cab-over-engine highway tractors was introduced by Mack. The H60 Gas/H-61 Diesel were powered with 170-hp Mack Thermodyne gas or diesel engines. The main features of these new models was their short BBC which allowed them to haul 35’ trailers in 45’ states. The problem of engine access so common in other large COE’s of that time, was solved by using a hand powered mechanical winch to tilt the cab forward, uncovering the engine and its accessories for servicing. Extensive use of aluminum alloy in various components made these tractor lighter than competitive models. At over 10’ high, these H60/H61 tractors were often referred to as “Cherry Pickers”. Notice the 1’ gap between the top fender step and the bottom of the door on the H61 ... in 1954 the H63 was lowered 1’ with the bottom of the door very close to the top fender step, lowering the cab height by 1’. Only 81 H-60T gas models were produced from 1953-1954, and 484 H-61T models from 1952-1957. One single order placed by ROADWAY EXPRESS accounted for 124 of these H-61T tractors. In comparison, some 4,000+ H-63 models were produced from 1954-1958 when the H-67 replaced them. In total, some 12,200+ H Models were produced in various configurations between 1952 and 1966.
