Fairbanks rotating-beam postal scale, 34 oz. capacity
This postal scale has a curved pan, perhaps suitable for holding a rolled newspaper. The beam and poise have one side marked for letters (2 cents/oz) and books (1/2 cent), calibrated in cents. The other side is for merchandise (1 cent) and newspapers (1/4 cent). Those were the days. The beam carries an 1897 patent stamp.
The scale is mechanically excellent and cosmetically nearly so. The decorative striping is worn away in places. The black paint shows some oxidation. There is no serious damage. The underside shows light rust, and a dowel (perhaps a clevis pin) has been replaced by a staple. The top of the pan has unimportant marks -- some sort of stain in the metal. See first picture. With the poise at 0, the beam floats, but barely above the stop; the counterweight is a tiny bit light - perhaps it could use one more shot, but this 115-year-old scale won\'t get that from me.
This is a beautiful scale. The 1999 Berning book shows its little brother - 8-oz capacity - at $125-150. It does not include this scale. I\'ve seen them occasionally, but usually in terrible condition. The scale will require a box 18x10x10 at least. It weighs 5-1/2 pounds. I will pack it securely in a new box and will ship to US or Canada, buyer\'s choice of UPS, USPS parcel post or USPS priority mail, for actual cost plus $4.00 to cover cost of box and packing materials. $24.50 price shown is for USPS parcel post within US; Canada will be higher. For other destinations please contact me before offerding.
I will be selling dozens of beautiful scales over the coming months.
