THIS HEN MALLARD AND THE DRAKE RIG-MATE THAT IS ALSO ON ARE AWESOME EXAMPLES OF THE RAREST AND EARLIEST DECOYS CANADIAN FACTORY DECOYS!!!!

This Very Rare and \"Pioneering-For-The-Time\", Hen Mallard duck decoy up for sale was made by one of the earliest North American Factories that Realized the Importance of a Superior Quality Decoy to Early Market Gunners and the Sportsmen that Followed!

This Canadian Company from Peterborough, Ontario was most famous for its manufacturing of Very High Quality, Wooden Canoes. But during the occasional slow periods in the canoe building business , the company quickly redeployed all of their manpower and resources into making a Very High Quality, Factory-Made Duck Decoy. And this was no passing fancy, as the company continuously made decoys in varying quantities from roughly the early 1900\'s until around 1948. The Decoys were made in 2 different sizes and in the different models. The larger body size was for mallards, exactly like this pair of Mallards up for sale, and for other large ducks like the Black Duck and Canvasback. The smaller body size for Bluebills, Whistlers, Redheads and smaller puddle ducks.

THE PICTURE ABOVE IS OF THE LARGER BODY STYLE and PICTURED HERE IS A PAIR OF MALLARDS VERY MUCH LIKE THIS PAIR UP FOR sale!!

THE PICTURE ABOVE IS OF A GOLDENEYE IN THE SMALLER BODY STYLE THAT THEY MADE ALSO FOR BIRDS LIKE REDHEADS & BLUEBILLS!!

The decoys that Peterborough Canoe Company made were available in three different configurations: solid body, bodies with 2 large holes in the bottom and a third that had the same 2 holes but also had factory weights attached. This Pair of Mallards up for sale are outstanding examples of the Body style with the two drilled bottom holes. This style was their trademark model and it is believed to be the one of the first, if not the first, to employ the concept of creating buoyancy by trapping air under the bottom of the decoy when placed in the water and became a vacuum to hold it upright and flat swimming. Obviously, another asset to this decoy is that it essentially also hollowed out the decoy and made it much lighter and more transportable. This method of hollowing was also much less labor intensive and less expensive than hollowing out the body and reattaching two halves or drilling in from the front like Evans and plugging the breast shut.

THE BOTTOM PICTURED ABOVE IS THE COMPANY\'S TRADEMARK AND EXACTLY LIKE THE BOTTOM\'S ON THIS EXCELLENT PAIR OF MALLARDS UP FOR sale!!

Finally, not only was Peterborough\'s 2-Hole Bottom popular from a sales standpoint, but it is credited with creating the template that local gunners in the Peterborough, Lindsay, Port Hope and Rice Lake areas would use for decades when the carved their own decoys for personal use. In addition to influencing local carvers, it is not out of the question that one of Peterborough\'s 2-Holed bottom was the inspiration for the two-holed decoys that were made by companies like Hudson Manufacturing in Mississippi, United States and their Vac-Sta, Duo-Sta and Mono-Sta models. Much like many other factory decoy makers that were in operation for a decade or more, including Mason to a much lesser degree, the paint jobs on Peterborough\'s decoys range dramatically over the years and with different artisans applying the paint. This pair of Mallards up for sale exhibit the absolute best paint that you will see on any Peterborough decoys, not just Mallards. The Beautiful blending on the Drake Mallard rig-mate is beautiful and the scratch painting and fine detail painting on this Hen is Truly Incredible. This Hen has Stippled paint on the breast, combed paint to the entire body and very fine detailed paint to the head and tail. Both decoys have eyes that were located and carved in perfectly and the speculums are very faint but they follow what was found on most Mason Premier Models and just about the same time period as Mason to Boot!!

THE MOST EXTRAVAGANT PAINT JOBS YOU WILL EVER SEE ON A PETERBOROUGH DECOY IS THE SCRATCH PAINTING ON HENS AND BLACK DUCKS; IT IS EXACTLY LIKE THE HEN THAT IS ALSO UP FOR sale!!

Additionally, exactly like this Pair of Mallards up for sale, Peterborough decoys had little or no bill carving as they let paint detailing create the dimensional look of the bills!! Another trait that all of Peterborough\'s decoys exhibit are tails that have a delicate and slightly inwardly-arced saw cut from the bottom of the decoy up to the raised bottom of the high tail. As far as form is concerned, the front of the decoy has a slightly flat \"S\" carved that starts from the base of the bill and sweeps under th bill to the neck and around the front of the breast to create this serpentine look. These characteristics are all perfectly demonstrated on this pair of Mallards up for sale, and also these Mallards head\'s are attached in their typical fashion with a screw from a recessed hole in the bottom that was then sealed with a pounded in and glued dowel end.

This Rare Hen Mallard up for sale exhibits all of the best qualities that the company\'s finest decoys exhibited, and since no other decoy maker\'s birds had anything even remotely similar during the same time period, you could say these Mallards up for sale are very much \"Pioneering\" Factory made wooden duck decoys. This pair of mallards have the hollow-body construction and they are made of solid cedar. The bottoms of these Mallard decoys up for sale have the two holes on the bottom to gain a vacuum advantage, but also decrease the decoy\'s weight making it much more transportable. The surface of this pair of Mallards have wonderful and very clean and concise paint jobs. The mallards both have 100% beautiful and original paint that has the typical heavy flaking to the front of the breast and they are in excellent condition with even wear to all of the edges and high spots. They clearly used well seasoned wood as these decoys don\'t even have a hint of a crack or check, they are structurally perfect although there is tight shrinkage to the right side of the seam on the drake. The bodies on these mallards have wonderfully detailed paint and the speculums were precisely painted on by an artisan like Mason\'s a stones throw into the U.S. in Detroit although they are very faint from even wear to them. This very nice and quite rare hen Mallard up for sale measures 16-1/8\" long x 5-1/2\" wide x 7\" tall and weighs a fairly hefty 2-lbs. exactly, and the Drake\'s dimensions and mass are identical. This Hen and the Drake that is also on , are a nice and important piece of the evolving history of factory and Minnesota decoys to add to your collection of wood duck decoys and shorebirds.
