1741 MF 8 Reales

Philip V

Mexico City Mint

In1741 there was one type of 8 Reales issued by the Mexico City Mint.

Thepractice at the mint was to identify the assayers by placing the senior assayer’sinitial above that of the junior assayer, using the initial of what we call“the first initial” in the United States of America. Manuel de Leon (1733-63)was the senior assayer and Francisco de la Pena y Flores (1733-54) was thejunior assayer. The initials weretherefore M vertically above F on the left hand side of the coin. Note that reference books vary as to whichside they designate as the obverse (front) and reverse (back). Of the 4 reference books cited below, onlyGilboy identifies the senior assayer as Manuel de Leon. The other 3 books identify him as Manuel dela Pena, with the same dates of service (1733-63). Since the first initial is used on the coin, this does not affect identification. Ihave not yet discovered why this variation exists.

Inreference books this coin is designated as Gilboy M-8-13, Elizondo #18,Olivia/Chaves Sanchez #602, Calbeto #752.

Mexico City 8 Reales from thebeginning of Milled coinage in 1732 through 1771 were 91.7% pure silver and hadan official average weight of 27.0674 grams.

Thisis a very nice looking coin which has toned to the extreme end of the colorspectrum (black).

Other Information

My shipment to you: The 8th largest city in the USA nolonger has a Post Office open after 5:00PM Monday through Friday. My mail routeis “in transition” so I no longer have any idea who is going to be deliveringmy mail, or at what time of day. I amnot going to leave a $50-$500 coin outside to be picked up by whomever. Given all of this, if you win and pay for acoin this morning, it probably won’t be put in the mail this afternoon.

Returns: If you do not feel that this coin is “rightfor you” after you have examined it, send it back to me (at your expense). Return it at your convenience, preferablywithin 14 days. The shipping to you is at my expense for domesticshipping.

Please readeverything I have stated to you about this coin, if I have made any specificcomments about it. If you have someconcern about the coin that I did not explain to you in this listing, send anemail to let me know what your concern is, if you want to. This is not some chunk of silverbullion. It is an old collector’s coin, and you and I both know, as coin collectors, that you really have to directlyexamine an old coin like this one to decide if you feel satisfied with what yougot. After you have looked at it, if youdecide that it is “not for you”, you don’t have to list a bunch of reasons whyyou have decided you do not want it.Just let me know that you will be sending it back so that I will know toexpect it. I have a lot of old 8 Reales. If for some reason we can’t get you tofeel satisfied with this coin, that doesn’t mean you won’t be happy with thenext one you win.

I want you to be satisfied with what you get.

I want to build a positive business relationship withyou, not just “get a sale”.
