Staffordshire Pearlware Prattware Commemorative Admiral Jarvis Jug c1798

~ Lord Jarvis on both sides of pitcher with Naval Ships, Dolphins and Guns ~

5" high and 5" from spout to handle

This type of Admiral Jarvis jug is illustrated three times in John and Griselda Lewis\' book \'Pratt Ware\' on pages 152-153, this one is most like the first numbered 32 with the plain loop handle. On both sides Jarvis holds a speaking trumpet in his right hand and is flanked by two naval vessels and the faces of two dolphins. Above the Admiral\'s head is a border of gun barrels and ramrods. On either side of his shoulder are two scrolls with his name \'LORD JARVIS\'; this is very faint on my jug but if you look with a magnifier, it is definitely there. The name scrolls are only on one side. The neck and base of the jug are decorated with long pointed leaves and the spout has a blue feathered edge where it joins the body. The handle has a blue raised acanthus design. All this is enameled in classic high fire prattware colors of ochre, blue, green and brown.

The pottery is very clean with fine crazing to the pearlware glaze. There are two chips on one side to the footrim and the handle has a hairline through the bottom section. There is a minor glaze flake to the front footrim slightly visible as seen above at the bottom. The spout and top rim are in excellent shape as well as the sides of the handle. The two chips could easily be invisibly restored and as it is now, looks great on display from the side seen above.
