Super cool, art deco Silvertone 4565 table radio, restored
Price: US $374.99
Hello, radio lovers!
For sale today is one of the prettiest table radios of the 1930s, a Silvertone 4565. Silvertones were the radio brand of Sears and Roebuck, and this 1936 "Golden Jubilee" set has the iconic, famous golden dial produced only that year, to celebrate Sears' 50th anniversary. This set has been restored and gets good reception on three bands. Here's a bit more:
ElectronicsThe chassis has been recapped, with all paper/wax capacitors replaced, as well as all resistors more than 10 percent off spec replaced. The radio had been through the ringer before I got it; I sent the speaker out to The Speaker Shop in Savannah, Ga., to be reconed and have the field coil rewound. The set has been aligned and gets good reception with a decent long wire antenna. While not the most high fidelity of 30s radios, this set pulls them in well. It's got a NOS, and very, very bright, 6E5 eye tube installed.
Cabinet:The cabinet was in a sorry state when I got it. I stripped down the polyurethane that a previous owner had applied and refinished it with a combination of Mohawk toners and lacquer. This set has been built up with about 8-9 coats of clear lacquer, with a top coat of semi-gloss to give it a nice muted look. The grill cloth is original to the set. NOTE that this set does have the original wooden back; it was not on the set when these photos were taken, but it will be included in the sale. If you would like photos of it, let me know! The set has its original knobs (on/off/volume, local/long distance, tuning, band and tone).
ShippingAt 21" by 14" by 12", thisis a big, heavy set. I will ship it double boxed, with upholstery foam all around, via Greyhound for $60 to anywhere in the continental United States. If you would like me to send it via a different carrier, that's no problem. Just let me know what you want to do. It's also available for pickup in Bristol, RI, and I will also deliver it up to 200 miles for $1 per mile.
Odds, endsThis is a very pretty set that really captures the period's art deco sensibility. As it is nearly 80 years old, there are no returns. But it will arrive to you in the condition described and I'm sure you will be happy with it. If you have any problems, let me know! I am a radio lover like you, and want you to be happy. Check my response to see what previous purchasers had to say about my radios, packing and overall service. Thanks for looking, and good luck!
