Tang Dynasty Amber Glazed Terracotta Figure of a Court Gentleman Attendant - 650
Price: GB $222.50

An elegant amber glazed terracotta figure of a court gentleman, dating to the early Tang Dynasty, 618 - 700 AD.

Coated in the rich amber glaze for which Tang ceramics are famed, this court gentleman is at once welcoming and elegant. With tender, convivial features, he is static and attentive in his pose, with the hands clasped in a traditional sign of respect, emphasizing the social hierarchies of Tang society. The body is covered in a long, loose garment, tied at the waist and obscuring the physical form.

Renowned for their mastery in capturing the inner spirit of their subjects, the figural artists of the ancient Tang Dynasty are rightly lauded for their ability to convey a strong sense of character in their creations. This wonderful piece is no different, with the hint of a smile he appears as if welcoming the viewer into his presence, though the subservient pose begs the question of whether the smile is truly genuine or not.
