Description:

A WW1 Booklet: \"The Book of the Ballarat\", compiled on board the HMAS Ballarat, an ANZAC troop ship on its way to England in April 1917.  The nine week voyage ended in disaster off the Cornish coast on 25th April 1917 when the ship was torpedoed.  All men on board survived.  The magazine articles were contributed by the troops giving anecdotes and observations of life on board a troop ship and the line drawings by Private W Matteson (Matte).  According to the last article, the magazine was practically ready for publication before disaster struck.  The last pages details the day of the torpedoing and images of the ship before she sank.  With the troops split up into different English camps it took some time to collate all the articles, and this magazine is the result of 9 weeks labour aboard the HMAS Ballarat.  The magazine is complete with 52 pages plus the covers.

Condition / Defects:

The booklet is in good condition; it has grubby pages with some foxing, but the pages are still bright.  Brown stain to the bottom edge.  The soft card covers are grubby and have an old taped repair to the lower section, the top three inches has subsequently split and have a tear across the front top right corner - see photos. I have photographed a selection of pages - so you can see the content and condition. Please supersize the photos to see better.

Dimensions:

Approx: 11¼\" x 8¾\" (285mm x 225mm).
